Early Detection for Breast Cancer

Early detection is the key to successful treatment of many types of cancer. To detect breast cancer early, women over age 20 should perform a breast self exam (BSE) every month. A woman who is familiar with her breasts will most likely notice early changes that occur.

If you are over age 40, you should have a mammogram every year. Valley General Hospital offers convenient mammography (breast x-rays) appointments on site for the early detection of breast cancer. Very low levels of radiation are used and Valley General technicians monitor and test the equipment regularly to ensure that it is safe and accurate.

A clinical breast examination by your health care provider is recommended every year if you are age 40 or older, or every three years if you are between 20 and 40 years old. See our physician directory or call 360-794-1411 for a local physician referral.
