Senior Behavioral Health Services

Specialized mental health treatment in a setting exclusively for seniors.

We specialize in geropsychiatry – the treatment of mental illness in persons over the age of 55. The most common mental illness in this population is dementia. The goal of treatment is to provide a safe and therapeutic environment for older adults who are experiencing difficulty functioning and return them to the most appropriate level of care in the community. The average length of stay is 9 to 12 days.

We utilize a multidisciplinary Treatment Team approach. The team includes psychiatrists, a family practice physician, nurse practitioners, a Case Manager, nurses, an Activity Specialist and Certified Nursing Assistants. Occupational, Physical, Respiratory and Speech therapists, Pharmacists and Dieticians are also available as needed. These professionals all work together to assess the patient, and with the patient and family’s input, formulate a plan of treatment. The patient and their family are included in the treating planning process.

We utilize a “therapeutic community” treatment model which emphasizes a safe, structured environment where open communication is encouraged and support is offered which promotes well-being.

We believe in the “Gentle Care” treatment philosophy which emphasizes each individual’s dignity and worth and that persons with dementia benefit from an adaptive environment, personal contact and supportive activities.

The environment incorporates familiar nature scenes with murals and “sky lights”. Music can often be heard playing – from classical to soothe and calm to upbeat big band and swing. Frequent visitors to the unit include the singing Chaplain and pet therapy dogs.
